Other Courses offered by the Department of Languages

A lesson is conducted for GCE (O/L) students once a week for two hours to support the students to develop their language skills and to get through the examination.

The Department of Languages offers an in-sessional Communication Skills in English course for the newly recruited Officer Cadets of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service. This course is offered as a course module of Leadership and Competency Development Programme for the Officers of the Sri Lanka Administrative Services conducted by the Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies.

The Department of Languages offers an in-sessional English course for the Oman Royal Navy Students to enhance their English Language Proficiency. This course is offered as a course module of the Advanced Diploma Course offered jointly by the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering and the Department of Marine Engineering.

This course is designed to develop integrated advanced language skills required to interpret and convey the meaning in context, with emphasis on both fluency and accuracy, in order to interact with others in social and academic situations. The course also improves the learners’ study skills and gives practice in utilizing English as a tool for individual study and research in a particular field.

By the end of the course, students should be familiarized with both formal and informal languages, take lecture notes effectively and synthesize from several sources, write essays, reports, letters and summaries, do critical reading on given passages, make oral presentations and do reference work from the internet and books.

A one year diploma is designed to enhance the English knowledge of Operation Theatre Technicians. English language related to the field of OTT is given prominence during the course.

The English module conducted under the course allows students to obtain positive results, as almost all personnel enhance their capacity in the use of written and oral skills in English, as a result of this venture.

A Short Course of 30 hours conducted during weekends.

Benefits – Provides a basic knowledge in English and improves ESL speaking, reading, writing and listening.

A basic English course that offers students opportunities to enhance their language skills. The course opens doors to better understanding of the language and communication. The learning experience of students is enhanced as individual attention is paid at all times while facilitating interactive classroom sessions by a panel of qualified lecturers from the Department.

b. Opportunity to learn English in a better environment with learning aids.

c. Opportunity to improve the four language skills in interactive sessions.

An advanced English course that offers students better opportunities to develop reading, writing, speaking and listening skills in English. The learning experience is enhanced as individual attention is paid at all times while facilitating interactive classroom sessions by a panel of qualified lecturers from the Department.

Benefits- a. Valid Certificate issued for the successful completion of the course.

b. Opportunity to learn English in a better environment with learning aids while assisting and training them to present themselves as competent communicators in the society.

c. Opportunity to improve the four language skills in interactive sessions.

Number of hours = 450

Eligibility = Tri-Services and Civil Staff members of KDU

A course designed to improve the 4 language skills in English: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students are exposed to a variety of situation based learning and communication opportunities. At the end of the course students could understand and communicate in English as a Second Language (ESL), easily and confidently.

Benefits- a) Exposure to a variety of task-based activities where they will learn while building team spirit and confidence.

b) Improves communication competence.

c) Provides opportunity to learn situation specific language skills.
