On August 30, 2024, the Nippon-Lanka Collaboration Centre (NLCC-KDU), which operates under the Department of Social Sciences at Metropolitan Campus – KDU in Colombo, successfully hosted the cultural exchange event “Night of Tomo (友)” at the FOM Cafeteria. The event marked the conclusion of the second Japanese Student Exchange Programme with JF Oberlin University in Japan, fostering a deeper connection between students from both nations.
The event was honored by the esteemed presence of Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara VSV, USP, PSC, MMaritimepol, BSc (DS), the Vice Chancellor of KDU, as the Chief Guest. Also in attendance were Mr. Tetsuya Yamada, Chief Representative of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Sri Lanka Office as the Guest of Honour, Mr. Inoue Hiroki, Second Secretary of the Embassy of Japan, and Mr. Hiroki Oi, Resident Representative of the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO). Their presence, alongside Mr. Nobuo Kanda and twelve Japanese students from JF Oberlin University, reflected the genuine spirit of cultural exchange between Sri Lanka and Japan. Distinguished guests including the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Defence and Administration, Deans, Heads of Departments, Military Officers, academic and non-academic staff, and students from KDU were also in attendance, further elevating the significance of the occasion.
The primary objective of the “Night of Tomo (友)” was to strengthen cultural bonds and promote mutual understanding between the students of KDU and JF Oberlin University. The event also provided a vibrant platform for students to showcase their musical and dancing talents, while simultaneously contributing to a noble cause—raising funds for the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project undertaken by Intake 41 students of the Department of Social Sciences.
The event kicked off with an electrifying performance by KDU Officer Cadet Beige Band, followed by traditional music performed by Intake 41 Officer Cadets. The evening’s entertainment featured a series of captivating dance and singing performances by both KDU students and staff, as well as students from JF Oberlin University. The night culminated in an energetic DJ session, where KDU and Japanese students shared the dance floor in a lively celebration of cross-cultural camaraderie.
The success of the event was a testament to the hard work and dedication of the students of Intakes 40 and 41 from the Department of Social Sciences. Under the guidance of Dr. Hemantha Premarathne, Coordinator of the Nippon-Lanka Collaboration Centre, Dr. Lakshika Liyanage, Dean of FMSH, Sqn Ldr HMBGDS Herath, Major KPSH De Silva of FDSS, and Lecturer (Probationary) Ms. Manuri Waleboda, along with other academic and non-academic staff, the event was a remarkable demonstration of teamwork, creativity, and cultural unity.
