The Department of Social Sciences’ Intake 41students visited the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) and Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) on the 26th of July 2024. This field visit aimed to deepen their understanding of media operations, offer practical exposure to the theories studied in the classroom, and provide interaction opportunities with professionals in the industry.
At SLBC, students explored both traditional and modern radio studios, gaining insight into the functions of news and programme sections. They also had the rare privilege of accessing SLBC’s extensive audio library, which preserves a rich archive of old songs and honors the legacy of past artists. The visit was coordinated by Mr. Madduma Bandara, Controller at SLBC, with valuable contributions from Ms. Subshini De Silva (Librarian), Mr. Manjula Weerasinghe (Research Officer), Mr. Sujeewa Harishchandra (Channel Head, Commercial Service), and Senior Journalists Mr. Salpitikorala and Mr. Wijaya Mapa.
The visit to SLRC provided a unique opportunity to understand the intricacies of television production and the operations of a major broadcasting institution. Students were guided by Mr. Viraj Darmadasa and Mr. Priyantha Wedamulla, both Producers at SLRC, while Ms. Neelakanthi Wijekoon, Director of Administration, represented the Chairman and DGM to receive the token of appreciation. The support of the “Visit Rupavahini team” was instrumental in making this visit a success.
A highlight of the visit was the students’ participation in a live radio broadcast, an experience that significantly enhanced their practical understanding of media operations. This visit marked the first media-related field trip organized by KDU under the Communication and Media Studies subject. The visit was overseen by Academic Coordinator MPM Waleboda and Military Coordinator Squadron Leader Suranga Herath, with guidance from Dr. Tamara Jayasundara, Dr. Darshana Ashoka Kumara, and the department staff. The Department of Social Sciences extends its sincere thanks to SLBC and SLRC for facilitating this enriching experience
