The Annual Case Study Tour (2024) of Intake 40 - BSc. Social Sciences Degree Programme

The Department of Social Sciences of the Faculty of Management, Social Sciences, and Humanities at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University successfully conducted its Annual Case Study Tour (2024) for Intake 40 to the Hambantota-Kataragama region in the Southern Province from October 3rd to October 5th, 2024. This three-day tour aimed to provide students with first-hand fieldwork experience, critically analyzing the interplay between cultural heritage, economic development, and environmental sustainability in the Kataragama and Hambantota regions.

Day One: Exploring Development Projects in the Hambantota District

The study tour began with a visit to the Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG), where Mr. Jeevan Premasara, Senior General Manager Human Resources and Administration, and Mr. Buddhika Sandaruwan, Assistant General Manager HR, Local Affairs, and CSR, along with their team, delivered an informative presentation. This session provided a comprehensive overview of HIPG’s operations, administration, processes, and development, followed by a Q&A session and a visit to the ViewPoint area of the Port.

Next, the students toured the Magam Ruhunupura International Convention Center (MRICC), where Major AKR Priyashantha (SO2) played a pivotal role in arranging the visit and ensuring the smooth execution of activities. A military officer from the Sri Lanka Army guided the students through the various sections of the facility, introducing them to its operations and highlighting the current challenges faced by the center.

In the afternoon, the students visited the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, where the Chief Airport Manager, Mr. Chamil Prasad, provided insights into the diverse aspects of airport management and the challenges of maintaining smooth operations. The first day concluded with a visit to the Sooriyawewa International Cricket Stadium, further emphasizing the region’s development projects.

The evening of the first day was dedicated to preparing the questionnaire for the field visit to the Southern Campus scheduled for the following day.

Day Two: Field Research in the Kataragama Area

The second day focused on data collection in five key areas, exploring cultural and socioeconomic aspects, environmental pollution, the economic status of vendors, and the significance of pilgrimage tourism related to the Kataragama Devalaya and its surroundings.

Students conducted detailed interviews with a diverse group of individuals, including pilgrims, vendors, clergy, and tourists at the Kataragama Devalaya and Kirivehera Temple. These interactions provided valuable insights into the challenges faced by the local communities, sparking curiosity and a deeper interest in research among the students. Special thanks are extended to Grama Niladhari Ms.Sugandika and Mr. Rathnayaka for their exceptional guidance and support throughout the day.

 

The evening was marked by camaraderie, with a night of music and food organized by the KDU Southern Campus.

Day Three: Charity Service at Mahanaga Maha Vidyalaya, Sevanagala

The final day was dedicated to a charity service project aimed at supporting fifty (50) students of Mahanaga Maha Vidyalaya, Sevanagala, by providing school stationery and sports equipment. The school Principal warmly welcomed everyone with a speech highlighting the school’s achievements, collaborations with KDU Southern Campus, and inspiring success stories.

Dr. Tamara Jayasundera emphasized the importance of the initiative in her address, while a student performance showcased the children’s talents. A KDU student also presented a dance item, and Ms. Kumuduni Weerasinghe and Ms. Manuri Pabasari delivered motivational talks on the value of education. Squadron Commander PLKM Jayakody, who has been a strong supporter of the school, also shared inspirational words. Special thanks go to the Principal and Deputy Principal for their assistance in making this event a success.

The students of Mahanaga Maha Vidyalaya actively engaged in the activities, making the day memorable for everyone involved. It was a day filled with joy, encouragement, and a profound sense of community.

This case study tour would not have been possible without the unwavering support of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University – Southern Campus. Special appreciation is extended to Rector Major General LCR Jayasuriya RSP ndc psc, Dr. AH Lakmal (Dean of the Faculty of Built Environment and Spatial Sciences), Squadron Commander PLKM Jayakody, Troop Commander Lieutenant SPA Madushan, and Flt Lt IMYH Chandrarathne for their assistance in organizing activities, including the bonfire and other arrangements.

The academic staff of the Department of Social Sciences, led by the Head of the Department, Dr. Tamara Jayasundera, included Senior Lecturer Ms. Kumuduni Weerasinghe, Lecturer Ms. Manuri Pabasari, Tutors Ms. Hashini de Silva and Ms. Chandima Gamage, and Sqn Ldr HPVRS Rathnasooriya along with two military persons from the Sri Lanka Army and Navy, and non-academic staff, also participated to the tour’s success.
