A night that dazzled in glamour, talent and togetherness was held on the enchanting evening of April 4th, 2025, with the name, “Night of Rhythms”. This vibrant effort was brought to life by the students of Intake 40, 41 and 42 from the Department of Social Sciences, Faculty of Management, Social Sciences, and Humanities (FMSH) of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU)
“Night of Rhythms” was graced by the esteemed presence of the Chief Guest, Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara VsV, USP, PSC, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS), Vice Chancellor of KDU, alongside Brigadier RKARP Ratnayake RSP, USP, psc, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence and Administration) of KDU.
This student-led extravaganza organized for the second consecutive year with the objective of strengthening the bond between Social Sciences students of different intakes and degree programs and also, to recognise and appreciate the exceptional aesthetic talents of students while also developing their event management and leadership skills
The show commenced with a powerful and vibrant performance by two Lady Officer Cadets from Intake 42 in the form of a traditional welcome dance beautifully merging elements from the traditional Udarata and Pahatharata dances. This captivated the audience and set an electrifying tone for the rest of the evening, leaving a lasting impression on all attendees.
From traditional melodies to contemporary rhythms, the performances showcased a harmonious blend of cultures in dance and renditions. In addition to the aesthetic performances, Intake 40 students organized a competitive game battle between Intake 41 vs Intake 42 students which built their skills in teamwork and camaraderie. The night ended with an invigorating performance by the Officer Cadet Beige Band followed by a DJ set that had everyone on their feet.
The successful execution of the event reflected the dedication and hard work of the students, guided by Dr. Tamara Jayesundera (Head of the Department of Social Sciences), lecturer Ms. Manuri Pabasari Waleboda, and tutors Ms. Hashini de Silva and Ms. Chanuthi Perera, with the support of other academic and non-academic members of the Department. A notable round of applause to the student compères and sound experts who ensured the seamless flow of the event.
The Department of Social Sciences extends its heartfelt gratitude to Brigadier RKARP Ratnayake RSP USP psc – Deputy Vice Chancellor (Defence and Administration) of KDU, Col AHR Hasantha RSP psc, Dean – Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies, Dr. Lakshika Liyanage, Dean – FMSH, Lt Col KP Rohan Kumara RWP RSP psc GR, Adjutant of KDU, Lt Col R T Ganegoda SLE, Co-Administration of KDU, and to all the Administrative and Logistic Supporting Military Staff for their tireless efforts in guiding and facilitating the event’s success.
As the laughter and applause fade, the “Night of Rhythms” continues to be a cherished memory, representing the spirit of unity, creativity, and camaraderie that defines the KDU community.
