A workshop on industrial training was organized by the Department of Social Sciences, on 31st May 2022, for intake 37 day – scholars with the purpose of facilitating a smooth transition from academics to the professional world of working.
The programme commenced with Mrs. Kumuduni Weerasinghe, Lecturer and Internship Coordinator for the Department of Social Sciences, welcoming the gathering and providing an introduction to the industrial training programme. This was then followed by an address by Mr. Nuwan Herath, the Head of the Department of Social Sciences, who provided guidance to the students and advised them on what to expect and how to best face what lies ahead for them.
Thereafter, a session themed “Vision for Life” was conducted by Emeritus Professor Piyadasa Hewage. Through this interactive session, Emeritus Professor Hewage introduced the students to the “Johari Window” technique, helping them better understand their relationship with themselves and others in a manner that was both educational and enjoyable.
A major component of the workshop was the experience-sharing sessions, in which students of previous intakes attended the program to share their knowledge and lessons learned with the undergraduates of intake 37. These discussions were led by Mr. Thilanka Navod of intake 34, Ms. Tasha Goonewardene, and Ms. Manujitha Jayakody of intake 36. While this helped the students receive candid advice, it also aided in providing them with insight into what a Social Sciences undergraduate is to expect in various fields ranging from Human Resources, and Administration to Research. The students also received the opportunity to ask questions and clear up any doubts they had regarding their internships.
In addition, the students also engaged in group activities led by Dr. Lakshika Liyanage, designed to help them build their skills in teamwork, communication, coordination, and critical thinking in a most enjoyable manner. The final session was once more conducted by Mrs. Kumuduni Weerasinghe, who educated the students on the official documentation required for their industrial training. The day then came to an end with the staff and students enjoying an entertainment session with music and song, wrapping up the workshop in a most memorable manner.
