“Thuru Mithuru”: A Programme for Students with Special Needs
“Thuru Mithuru,” a project initiated by the Wings Lanka Foundation organized a one-day programme for students with special needs from the “Sahaja School” in Ratmalana under the theme “අපේක්ෂාවන්ටඉඩක්දෙන්න” (Allow for Expectations). The Rotaract Club of KDU, Lions Club of Colombo Royalty and the Department of Social Sciences, along with a group of its undergraduates and academic staff, took part in helping to organize and implement this project.
The students at the Sahaja School, accompanied by their teachers and parents, were invited to the KDU Club House on the 29th of April 2022 for a day of enjoyment. The day’s activities included the memorial planting of four trees by the invitees including – senior members of the Lions Club, Rotaract Club, Wings Lanka Foundation, and the Academic Staff of the Department of Social Sciences along with the Students and Staff from the Sahaja School. This signified the message of the day which was to emphasize love and compassion for the environment and our responsibility to protect it. Following the planting of trees, the students engaged in a colourful display of music and dance showcasing their talents and adding a significant value to the day. The children were then gifted with specially crafted books, a plant each, stationery items, snacks, and sanitary items – donated by the organizing bodies and the 36th Intake of Social Sciences. The students and invitees were treated to lunch and tea bringing the day’s events to a close.
