The Department of Languages of General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University offers English Language courses for all bachelor’s degree programmes at the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, and these courses have been designed for specific requirements of different faculties and their degree programmes on the principles of the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) curriculum design.

This is an extensive course designed to improve the English competence of students belonging to the Faculty of Engineering. In the first year, students are exposed to general grammar in English language and day to day situation based vocabulary. The task-based activities used within the classroom enable students to improve their speaking, reading, writing and listening skills. Technology, team work and presentations take prominence in the language learning environment.

In the 2nd year of English for Engineering, students are exposed to research and report writing skills. Students are given guidance to conduct research on their own, inclusive of writing a proposal.

The course facilitates students to understand the language well, enhance their language skills and speaking confidence as successful communicators, when graduating as Engineers.

A curriculum based on English as the Second Language (ESL) is followed in the Medicine and Allied Health Science faculties, to develop the academic language proficiency of students. It is important for ESL teachers to go beyond the functional English syllabus and to start providing a content-rich, high-standard curriculum that prepares ESL students to become academically successful in content learning.

The course develops the necessary English language skills of MBBS and AHS students to successfully follow the degree and enable them to communicate effectively in the healthcare field; and focus on specific language skills and vocabulary used in the medical field to enhance good communication and interpersonal skills.

The course helps students enhance their English language competency, especially in Research Writing and Communication Skills, which would be beneficial in academic studies and performance in the medium of English, and in their profession as healthcare professionals, after graduation.

Medical Faculty – English is conducted in 04 parallel classes for cadets and international students.

Allied Health Science – English is conducted in the departments of: Nursing, Physiotherapy, Pharmacy, Medical Laboratory Sciences and Radiography.

English as a subject is also taught for Diploma in Operating Theatre Technology (OTT) students at the AHS faculty.

 

English and Communication Skills course offered to the LLB degree programme of the Faculty of Law begins in the first year of the degree and continues until the completion of the third year. The curricula is designed to cater to specific English Language and communication requirements of the undergraduates of Law, with an aim to equip them with enhanced speaking, writing and listening skills in the context of law.

The Department of Languages offers 12 English in-sessional courses for the degrees offered by the Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities. These course are based on English for Specific Purposes and English for Academic Purposes, and they are incorporated in the degree programmes as course modules of BSc in Management and Technical Sciences, BSc in Logistics Management and BSc in Social Sciences as mentioned below.

The Department of Languages offers an English Language and Communication Skills course for the students of the IT Department.

The English language units are aimed at improving the language proficiency of students and equip them with language skills essential for academic purposes.

The Communication Skills course focuses on providing the students with theoretical as well as practical knowledge regarding communication theories and their significance. Conducted in their first academic year, these courses aim to lay a solid language and communication skills foundation.
