The Data Odyssey, spearheaded by the AI and Data Science Club (DatAInspire), made its debut in 2023 as an exciting exhibition, held in collaboration with the 16th International Research Conference at the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU). Riding on the success of that inaugural event, Data Odyssey 2024 elevated the stakes, evolving into a prestigious inter-university software innovation competition. This year’s event opened new doors for participants, offering a unique platform to explore cutting-edge technologies, exchange insights, and collaborate on solving real-world challenges creatively and innovation in the realms of AI and data science.
With the theme “AI for a Sustainable Society” Data Odyssey 2024 focused on addressing pressing environmental and social issues through technological solutions. The competition unfolded across three pivotal stages: proposal submission, demo submission, and the much-anticipated grand finale.
The grand finale took place on 27th September 2024, at KDU’s FMSH premises, held alongside the 17th International Research Conference at KDU. This spectacular conclusion drew together some of Sri Lanka’s brightest university minds, each showcasing their expertise in AI and data science. A distinguished panel of judges, including Dr. Samantha Mathara Arachchi, Ms. Sandali Perera, Dr. Nuwan Jayarathna, Dr. Udaya Rahubadde, CAPT. (RETD) S.U. Dampage, and Ms. Chamodhi Wickramasinghe, assessed the competing teams.
The grand event was graced by the Chief Guest, Rear Admiral HGU Dammika Kumara, VSV, USP, psc, MMaritimePol, BSc (DS), Vice-Chancellor of KDU, along with esteemed guests like Dr. Lakshika Liyanage (Dean, Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities), Dr. MTN Wijetunge (Head, Department of Languages), and Professor Bimali Indrarathne, further elevating the prestige of the occasion.
After fierce competition, Future Minds from General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University emerged as the champions of Data Odyssey 2024. Data Knights, also representing KDU, secured the 1st runner-up position, while Team Zyndicate from Sabaragamuwa University claimed the 2nd runner-up spot. Special accolades were awarded as well, with The Glitch from KDU recognized for the Best Use of Technology and Team Zyndicate praised for Best Team Collaboration.
Data Odyssey 2024 was not merely a competition—it was a celebration of the immense potential and rising talent in AI and data science. It highlighted the power of innovation, collaboration, and data-driven solutions, paving the way for a more sustainable, tech-enabled future in Sri Lanka.
